Live table view like Vectron Vario (again!)

One of the sales guys ran me this morning to ask for this again...

In case you've not ever seen a Vectron Vario (lucky you!) they had both a membrane keyboard and touch screen. As half the touch screen was rarely used, Vectron had this thing where, if no one was signed it, it had a live list of open tabs.

If you're running a busy pub/restaurant and you have, at all times, a quick-glance status you minimise the chance of someone walking out without paying so there is a business case for such a feature. To check with TouchPoint you'd have to at least sign in and set the Clerk to default to Floor Plan (and then exit out of the Floor Plan to allow other people to sign in.)

In the past I attempted a complex ETAL script which, after you'd signed off, signed on a "fake clerk" with a list of tables refreshing every few seconds. It wasn't as elegant as the Vario display and it crashed the tills after a few hours (memory leak in Squirrel?)

So, before I revisit the code, what are the chances of this working reliably on current TP?

I also have an alternative idea that might be worth investigating...

As the latest PocketTouch has the "live" floorplan it must be possible to query the Check Master for this information. Given that Windows tablets are ultra-cheap now could I knock up a quick app that simulates either the Floor Plan, View Open Checks or both in a Windows app and have that sat behind the bar. It wouldn't interfere with the operations of the till like an ETAL script with the added bonus that you could eyeball it even while the tills were in use.

Any thoughts and suggests, as ever, much appreciated :)
